The Macedonia City Council met on April 9, 2026, to celebrate local athletic achievements and authorize key safety and infrastructure improvements. The meeting opened with a historic recognition of the Nordonia High School girls basketball team, followed by legislative action to upgrade police vehicle insurance, update environmental codes, and fund a major safety netting project at Longwood Park. These actions highlight the city’s dual focus on honoring community excellence and maintaining the high standards of Northeast Ohio municipal operations. Nordonia Girls Basketball Earns Historic Recognition A primary highlight of the evening was a special proclamation issued by Mayor Nick Molnar and the City of Macedonia to recognize and commend Coach Ryan Wolfking , his assistant coaches, and the members of the Nordonia High School girls basketball team. The team achieved an extraordinary milestone this past winter by capturing the school’s first-ever district championship and advancing to the “Sweet 16” in the OSAA regional tournament. Mayor Molnar praised the program’s turnaround, specifically highlighting the leadership of seniors Hayden Paul , who set a single-game scoring record of 40 points, and Taylor Morgan , a defensive standout. Enhanced Insurance for Police and Ballfield Safety Council successfully moved to protect city assets and residents through the passage of several ordinances. Ordinance 22-2026 was adopted to renew the city’s insurance with Ohio Plan Risk Management, Inc. , crucially switching police vehicle coverage to “replacement cost” instead of “actual cash value” following two recent total-loss accidents. Furthermore, the city authorized a nearly $200,000 contract with Veterans Fence for the Longwood Park ballfield netting project. This project, which has been a priority for the Parks and Recreation Commission for years, will install safety nets at all four fields to protect spectators from foul balls. EPA Compliance and Infrastructure Maintenance To ensure continued compliance with federal environmental mandates, the city passed Ordinance 24-2026 , amending local codes regarding stormwater discharge . Service Director John Gelati noted that the verbiage is required by the EPA to prevent illicit discharges and manage clean water flow from sources like swimming pools. Additionally, the council approved the resurfacing of the Macedonia Family Recreation Center lap pool and diving well. This maintenance, handled by OP Aquatics , is timed to coincide with the facility’s annual shutdown to minimize the impact on residents. Service Building Progress and Budget Success The city also acknowledged a significant financial win regarding the construction of the new service building. Council approved a motion to accept a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) that came in at approximately $166,000—well under the initial $172,000 estimate. Law Director Mark Gdetti , who was also celebrated for his upcoming birthday, noted that the GMP protects the city from cost overruns and material price hikes. This fiscal responsibility ensures that the Nordonia Hills community continues to see infrastructure growth without exceeding budgeted taxpayer funds.
