Orange Avenue to Be Renamed in Honor of Coach Orlando Green Near Buchtel High School

Akron City Council unanimously passed a resolution to rename a portion of Orange Avenue near Buchtel High School in memory of Coach Orlando Green, a beloved track and cross country coach who mentored generations of students before his passing in 2022.
At the March 2, 2026 Akron City Council meeting, Councilwoman Jan Davis introduced a resolution designating a portion of Orange Avenue — the street leading into the Buchtel High School parking lot — in memory of Coach Orlando Green. About Coach Green: - Head coach of girls cross country and girls track & field at Buchtel High School (2015-2022) - Passed away October 30, 2022 at age 52 - Described by council members as "more than just a coach — a mentor, a father figure, and a steady presence" - His wife Toree and daughter Londy were present and recognized at the meeting Council Action: - Sponsored by Councilwoman Jan Davis (Ward 4) - Passed as Mayor and Council as a whole on motion by Councilwoman Linda Omobien - Unanimous vote: 13-0 - A grand celebration and street renaming ceremony is planned for spring 2026 Councilman Johnny Hannah praised Green as a young Black man who "found his purpose in life and that was to help our youth."
